French 18K Gold Long Guard Chain

Dating to circa 1880, this substantial French gold long guard is an exceptional example of the weight and craftsmanship found in 19th-century jewelry. At 48 grams, it has a wonderful presence while still falling beautifully against the body.

Long guard chains were traditionally worn at considerable length, often wrapped or layered around the neck in multiple passes. The chain features elongated lozenge-shaped links measuring approximately 6 x 14 mm, interspersed with double belcher links that give the piece its distinctive rhythm and fluid drape.
